Miracle Baby Manushi: Against All Odds, She Thrives

One of the smallest babies in the world to ever survive is finally going home! After spending the first six months of her life in the hospital, baby Manushi's incredible journey has captured hearts around the globe. Born just 400 grams (about 0.88 pounds) when she was 12 weeks premature, Manushi faced overwhelming challenges right from the start, highlighting the resilience and strength of both her and her family.

Born on June 15 in Rajasthan, India, Little Manushi came into the world not breathing and with serious health concerns. Her condition was dire; she had paper-thin skin, underdeveloped organs, and feet no larger than a thumbnail. Doctors believed survival was unlikely, but this tiny warrior had other plans!

Despite the odds stacked against her, Manushi started to gain weight and show signs of improvement. Her mother, Seeta, described her as a miracle, stating, “She’s just fought and fought and fought against all the odds, but she’s made it.” This statement reflects not only the struggles of Manushi but also the unwavering love and hope of her family during an incredibly tough time.

Early Life and Birth Details

Manushi was born via emergency Caesarean section after doctors discovered that there was no blood flow to her while she was still in the womb. Delivered at just 28 weeks, she was immediately placed on a ventilator and transferred to the intensive care unit (NICU) at Jivanta Children’s Hospital. Initially, her chances of survival were slim, causing deep concern for her parents.

Dr. Janged, one of the doctors who cared for Manushi, recalled the uncertainty surrounding her birth. “When the baby was born, we were uncertain of what would happen,” he said, reflecting on the gravity of her condition. Even after her birth, the outlook remained bleak, as doctors informed her parents that she had only a 0.5% chance of surviving without brain damage.

Challenges Faced in the NICU

In the first few days after her birth, Manushi lost weight, which further reduced her chances of survival. However, she proved to be a fighter. With the help of multiple transfusions of essential nutrition and blood, along with respiratory support, Manushi began to stabilize. Remarkably, she was able to start digesting milk at just seven weeks old, marking a significant milestone in her recovery.

Dr. Janged explained that they had to provide Manushi with total parenteral nutrition, meaning all essential nutrients were delivered directly into her bloodstream. This intensive care enabled her to gain strength and, against all odds, thrive.

Going Home

At six months old, Manushi reached a weight of 5.2 pounds (approximately 2.35 kg) and was finally healthy enough to go home. This moment was not only a huge relief for her parents but also a remarkable achievement for the medical team that cared for her. To further ease the burden on her family, the hospital waived what would have been a staggering hospital bill of one million rupees (around £11,500), showcasing the commitment of the medical staff to support Manushi and her family.
